Bio
Dr. Tony E. Medlin holds a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University's theatre program and degrees from Trinity University (MFA, Acting/Movement-mime) and East Carolina University (BFA, Drama and Speech). He trained under Paul Baker at the Dallas Theatre Center's Professional Actor's Training Program and under Johnny Simons at the Dallas Theatre Center and at the Hip Pocket Theatre. He attended an extended "Interpreting for the Deaf" seminar at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville as well as ASL classes in Dallas and Baton Rouge. He presented papers at numerous national conferences and international conferences.
I directed or appeared in hundreds of plays throughout the South and Southwestern United States and performed leading roles in several national and international, touring companies. In Florida and North Carolina's prestigious Visiting Artist Programs, he held six, year-long residencies as an actor, director, and playwright. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Medlin collaborated with Johnny and Diane Simons at the Hip Pocket Theatre for almost thirty years. Other works with the Hip Pocket included: directing a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Bass Hall in a collaboration between the Hip Pocket and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Miguel Garth-Bedoya, directing A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur’s Court, directing Waiting For Godot, acting in The Impresario, Cowboys # 2, The Beggar’s Opera, and The Lake Worth Monster. Medlin directed Out of Pocket, a collaborative production between The Hip Pocket Theatre and the Dallas Children’s Theatre. He was also seen in numerous productions staged by the Dallas Shakespeare Festival, The Dallas Theater Center, Swine Palace, Playmaker’s Repertory Theatre, Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre, Tulane Shakespeare Festival, the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival. New Arts Theatre, and Callier Theatre of the Deaf. He appeared as a principle character in the feature film, “Blood On the Highway,” a comedy-horror, vampire movie. He also appeared and directed numerous productions at university, college, and community theatres.
The disciplines of Clownwork and Commedia dell'Arte are a significant part of Mr. Medlin's professional development with extensive investigations and training in the disciplines of American Sign language, Shito-Ryu Karate, Aikido, and Tai Chi. Mr. Medlin worked in the fields of radio, television, and motion pictures in numerous capacities.
